The Birth of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Edinburgh

Following a two year period of discussion and much work of necessary preparation, the Erection and Consecration of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Edinburgh took place within Freemasons Hall, George Street, Edinburgh on Saturday 17th October 1998. Immediately thereafter, the Installation of the Provincial Grand Master and the Commissioned Office Bearers of the new Province was held.

Some six hundred and fifty Freemasons, primarily from the Lodges within the new Province of Edinburgh, witnessed the solemn and dignified ceremony of Erection and Consecration presided over by the Most Worshipful Grand Master Mason, Brother The Right Honourable Lord Burton. After a thought-provoking address by the Grand Chaplain, Brother Rev. John Graham, on the Nature and Objects of Freemasonry, the Consecrating Officers circumnambulated the Lodge. In the South, West and East, the Grand Master scattered corn, and poured wine and oil respectively. In doing so, he dedicated the Provincial Grand Lodge to Freemasonry, Virtue and Universal Benevolence and Charity.

The Grand Director of Ceremonies then proclaimed the Provincial Grand Lodge:

Brethren, by command of the Most Worshipful Grand Master Mason, I hereby proclaim that, by virtue of the power and authority of Grand Lodge, there is now erected and consecrated a Provincial Grand Lodge of Antient, Free and Accepted Masons by the title and designation of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Edinburgh to be holden in Edinburgh and from henceforth it is empowered to exercise all its rights and privileges agreeable to the Constitution and Laws of Grand Lodge and the antient usages of the Fraternity.
